Keynote by Christian Clapton, Chief Operations Officer at Grasslands Taber Collaborative and Co-Director of the Open Banking Initiative Canada

Open Banking Canada: The genesis of our "data economy"

Open banking - or consumer-directed finance as coined by Canada's Minister of Finance - will be the genesis of our "data economy" in this country. The first to benefit from this will be the consumer as open banking will offer control, choice, confidence and convenience in how they manage both their finances and their personal data.

  • Learn what open banking is and understand the value to us as consumers.
  • Understand the impact of open banking in European countries like the UK and Germany.
  • Appreciate the perspective of the Canadian banking industry and why they are justified in their concerns about the advent of open banking and what they are doing.
  • Explore the technology of open banking and the granular value of this technology from the perspective of a consumer.
  • See how the changing banking industry will have far-reaching impacts on our economy as Canada cautiously moves toward a "data economy".
  • Understand the current and future opportunities that open banking will provide corporations and their employees.

Christian Clapton

Christian is a leading advocate for bringing open banking to the Canadian financial services industry. As co-director of Open Banking Initiative Canada (OBIC), the first fully comprehensive effort to develop a market-driven open banking framework in Canada, OBIC gathers leaders in finance, technology and regulation, creating a groundswell that will give Canadian consumers choice and control over their financial data while fostering growth for banks and fintechs.

Prior to his appointment with OBIC, Christian spent almost two decades focused on developing solutions for the financial services sector. Driven by a deep conviction to help banks and credit unions overcome barriers to success through digital technology, he evolved a small agency into a national award-winning fintech.

Today Christian continues to be a thought leader in the Canadian financial services space. He views open banking as the path to help FIs, fintechs, regulatory bodies and industry experts come together to build trusted, sustainable relationships that can strengthen the financial ecosystem and the very fabric of the Canadian economy. Most importantly, he believes that the collaborative spirit of open banking will ultimately empower consumers to improve their financial well-being.
