A.J. Lowik is an interdisciplinary scholar whose work spans sociology, critical health, and trans
studies. Their research program uses qualitative and arts-based methods to examine trans and
queer reproductive health, including menstruation, perinatal care, lactation, abortion, and
menopause. They are also a methodologist, focusing on the measurement of sex and gender
through the conceptualization and operationalization of multidimensional constructs, the
validation of inclusive survey items, and the development of data collection strategies that
address longstanding gaps and misclassification in research involving intersex, trans and Two-
Spirit people.
