Cultural Resource Management Program and Course Information

The first semester introduces students to the major theoretical and historical issues related to Cultural Resource Management (CRM). Our core course is seminar-style, in which students explore legal and theoretical issues in a shared presentation learning environment. The other course in the first semester will vary, depending on the needs of the student. Most commonly it will be an advanced course related to the region and time period of interest to the student. If the student has sufficient background, however, this may be substituted with a course related to archaeological methods.

The second semester and following summer will be the student’s opportunity to learn in a co-operative education environment, through a placement with a CRM firm. Here students will get “on-the-job” training in archaeological methods and in the administrative, reporting, and consultative methods essential for this industry.

The final year of the student’s program will involve a thesis project, working with materials collected in a CRM environment (and, optionally, collected during the student’s co-op placement). The student will be required to produce a thesis that meets the requirements of best reporting in the CRM industry and reflects the norms of scholarly practices.
