Design and Construction Standards

Design and Construction Standards

This document serves as a framework for all consultants working on new facilities, renovation projects, and ongoing maintenance of infrastructure. The content includes information on the Facilities' organization and approval processes, the University Campus Master Plan (UCMP) objectives as well as important development principles and design considerations. This document describes the requirements for typical building and site components as they relate to function, flexibility, accessibility, serviceability, and anticipated facility life expectancy. In addition to general criteria, these Standards define and emphasize many characteristics unique to our campus setting. The comprehensive technical guidelines outline the principles for all primary disciplines including architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and landscape architecture.

The Design and Construction Standards are not intended to prescribe or limit what might be the most appropriate solution or innovation in a properly considered design context. The Standards should allow consultant teams unfamiliar with the University Campus to quickly understand our context in relation to guiding principles intended to further advance objectives of the University Campus Master Plan as a cohesive long-term vision for our campus.

These Standards are intended to be read in conjunction with current construction codes and other applicable provincial standards in force, including the Alberta Building Code (ABC) and Alberta Fire Code (AFC). In no way is the University of Lethbridge Design and Construction Standards to be construed as a replacement for other Municipal, Provincial, or Federal codes, standards, or current practices that represent minimum acceptable levels of performance on the day these Standards are published.

These standards are under constant review and revision. As changes, updates, and new sections are incorporated, the version number and issue date will be updated. At the start of each project, prime consultants shall acknowledge the current version of the university design standards in use. These guidelines are an enforceable reference point for all renovations and new construction projects. This will ensure consistent improvement in the university's learning, research, and work environments each time capital dollars are allocated.

The University Design and Construction Standards document is maintained by Campus Planning and implemented by the Project Management Office (PMO).
