When can you apply for a Combined Degrees program?

Before we can consider your application, you’ll need to meet the admission requirements.

What if you're not accepted?

The competition is tough for our program, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up after your first try. Just keep taking courses in your major and apply again at the end of your third (or fourth) year.

Choose a Teachable Subject

When you go through our program, you learn to teach well at every grade level. That’s why you need to choose a teachable subject before you apply. When you graduate, you’ll be prepared to teach that subject to all grade levels, making you very well rounded as an educator and abundantly more employable.

Your choices are:

Thinking about a transfer?

Some Colleges in Alberta offer the first two years of the Combined Degrees program. If that sounds like you:

  1. Check with your College to find out if you have the required courses completed.
  2. If your College offers those courses, you’ll need to complete them prior to March 1.

Our program is so highly regarded that many students transfer from other universities to the U of L to complete their pre-Education Combined Degrees program.

Whether you are transferring from a College or a University, if you don’t have the required courses completed, or if you are not successful in gaining admission into the Faculty of Education, you could still be admitted into the pre-Education Combined Degrees program where you’ll continue to take courses in your first degree.

Interested in an (optional) Education minor?

You may wish to consider including an (optional) Education minor in your program. This will give you a secondary teachable subject using elective courses outside of your major. A second teachable subject provides you with a broader range of curriculum content, especially if you choose to teach at the elementary level.

If wish to find out more about Education minors, refer to the Education section in the UofL Academic Calender, or contact Student Program Services in the Faculty of Education.

Completing the Education Requirements

To complete the Bachelor of Education portion of the Combined Degrees program, you must satisfy all program requirements as follows (a minimum of 20 semester Education courses):

Becoming a teacher

At the end of this journey, you’ll have about 27 weeks of teaching under your belt. This means you can apply for teacher certification to teach Kindergarten to Grade 12 in the Province of Alberta. If you’d like to teach in any other province, you’re qualified to do so but you’ll have to complete some paperwork through that province’s teacher certification process.
