What is Finance (FINC)?

Finance is the study of financial decision-making through investments, portfolio management, and corporate finance as well as managing risk in a volatile economy. Finance incorporates the basics of economics, accounting, and statistics through quantitative and qualitative methods.

As a FINC student, you will get to experience a unique and hands-on financial management education both inside and outside the classroom. The Dhillon School of Business' world class Centre for Financial Market Research and Teaching, or 'trading room', is fully integrated into our teaching methodolgy by way of bridging your academic knowledge and practical experience through study areas such as corporate and personal finance, fundamentals of investments, global financial management, financial technology (FinTech), managerial skill development, and management policy and strategy, making you career ready. You will additionally draw from and form conceptual connections through other fields such as economics, human resources, social responsibility, international management, marketing, and mathematics.

Students who want to pursue the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFAĀ®) professional designation - recognized as the premier certification for investment professionals - will be happy to know that a substantial proportion of uLethbridge's BMgt-FINC degree (any admission route and campus) is CFA recognized. This means our curriculum aligns with the CFA Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) and emphasizes the CFA Institute's Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. BMgt-FINC program students are also provided with the opportunity to access CFA-issued scholarships which they can apply for to help cover the cost of CFA exams.
