Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts & Science

Curriculum and Admissions Management

  • Oversight of new course and program proposals
  • Liaising with the University’s Curriculum Coordination Committee and Admissions Standards Committee
  • Coordination of preparation and submission of materials to the Campus Alberta Quality Council (CAQC)
  • Other curriculum-related activities as required
  • Oversee domestic transfer and articulation matters in consultation with the Registrar’s Office and the Director, Curriculum and Academic Scheduling

New Programme & Initiative Development

  • Development of new initiatives and programmes in accordance with identified strengths and in coordination with the Strategic Enrolment Management plan
  • Coordinating arts and science elements to be included in the Institutional Access Plan, and the Enrolment Planning Envelopes
  • Exploration of alternative course delivery models and methods
  • Providing assistance in coordination of funding requests

Graduate Studies

  • Liaise with the School of Graduate Studies to enable and support graduate work within the Faculty of Arts & Science
  • In association with Dean’s Office administrative support, assign and monitor the graduate teaching assignments (GTA’s) of all graduate students in the Faculty
  • Work with Department’s Chairs and Program Coordinators, to ensure the optimal, efficient and fair use of GTA resources within the Faculty
  • Coordinate with the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) to the extent needed, to ensure transparency in GTA resource allocation, and graduate student work assignments

Research

  • Coordinate with the Office of the Vice-President Research on matters of importance, including involvement in major funding application selection and review processes
  • Promote research productivity and creative activity across all disciplines in the Faculty of Arts & Science

Academic Advising

  • Supervising advisors; indirectly supervising support staff
  • Assessing performance
  • Reviewing requests for substitutions, exceptions, and retroactive withdrawals with cause
  • Managing academic probation and required withdrawals
  • Hearing appeals

Necho Approvals

  • Act as Dean’s designate, where needed, for one-over-one signing authority for expenditures by faculty members, Chairs, Coordinators

Searches

  • Representing the Dean at teaching, research, and interview sessions for academic candidates

Professional Activities Reports and Salary, Tenure, and Promotion Tasks

  • Assisting in the process for annual/biennial evaluation of faculty members, and in the management/operation of activities of STP Committees

Teaching

  • Participating in the delivery of the undergraduate program (no more than one course per academic year)
  • Instructing and supervising graduate students (at discretion, and in accord with needs of the program of research)

Research

  • Maintaining an active research program, including publications and conference presentations

Public Relations/Advancement

  • Attending, and occasionally hosting, public events on behalf of the Faculty and the University

Other Duties

  • Miscellaneous duties assigned and undertaken as needed, for the efficient functioning of the Dean’s Office
