HYRS Applications

Please note that you must complete all components of the application. The online application form has multiple sections, and you must complete each section before proceeding to the next. As a result, you will not be able to view all the questions without submitting your answers. Additionally, the online form will only save responses for 24 hours, so work on your application outside the online form before submitting to ensure you have all required information.

How to complete your application:

  1. Complete all sections of the HYRS Student Application Form below.
    • You must have at least an 85% average in each of Math 20-1 or 20-2, Biology 20, and one other Grade 11 science.
      • Please submit your most recent grade reports, stamped by your school office. You do not need to pay to get an official transcript. A PowerSchool printout signed or stamped by the front office is fine. 
      • We will not consider Grade 12 courses.
    • Have a parent or legal guardian endorse and submit their signature
  2. Arrange your TWO teacher references
    • 2 science teachers, OR 1 science teacher and 1 math teacher
    • Please ask them to complete the referee form located here.
    • You are responsible for checking that this is completed
  3. Arrange for ONE community reference (non-academic)
    • The referee must be an adult who is not a relative and is outside your high school.
    • Please ask them to complete the referee form located here.
    • You are responsible for checking that this is completed

For students living outside Lethbridge who cannot arrange their own accommodation, please note the appropriate section on the application form (Living Arrangements).

What qualifications do I need?

  • At least an 85% standing in each of Math 20-1 or 20-2, Bio 20, and one other Grade 11 science
    • Grade 12 courses will not be considered for eligibility to the HYRS Program
  • An essay demonstrating an interest in biomedical and health research.
  • 3 references in support of your application.
    • 2 references must be science teachers (or 1 science teacher and 1 math teacher)
    • 1 reference must be from a community member who is not related to you and who is outside of your high school
  • Successful applicants must give a presentation about their HYRS experiences to a grade 11 high school science class after their HYRS experience
  • A willingness to commit to a continuous six-week period in the summer
    • There will be no modification of the schedule to allow for student vacations, participation in competitions, or to collect awards
