HYRS Student Application

Deadlines

Student applications are due by Friday, March 26, 2027, at 11:45 p.m. (MT)

References are due by Monday, March 29, 2027, at 11:45 p.m. (MT).

How much does HYRS cost?

HYRS students do not pay anything to participate in the program. In fact, HYRS students will receive a $3,000 (approximate) award through Alberta Innovates.

All students will cover their own meals, travel, and entertainment costs.

How do I apply for HYRS?

  1. Complete the online application form. Learn more about applying here.
    • Please download and use this editable application template to help compile your responses before you access the online application form.
    • IMPORTANT: Please note that you must complete all components of the application. The online application form has multiple sections, and you must complete each section before proceeding to the next. As a result, you will not be able to view all the questions without submitting your answers. Additionally, the online form will only save responses for 24 hours, so work on your application outside the online form before submitting to ensure you have all required information.
    • Note: A committee of science teachers/career practitioners and University of Lethbridge researchers judges HYRS applications.
  2. Ask 2 Teachers to complete the reference form
  3. Ask 1 Community member to complete the reference form

Please note: The HYRS program focuses on health research and innovation, which does not always involve traditional laboratory work. Biomedical research that includes lab work is part of the program, but represents only a small portion of the broader field. As a result, most HYRS placements are not primarily lab-based. Placements typically focus on improving healthcare or supporting sustainable health systems through new technologies and often involve computer-based work in an office setting. Some placements may also include clinic or community activities. In some years, a small number of students may also be placed in research areas outside of health, depending on available mentors and projects.
