Workshop Description

Interested in working with satellite imagery and geospatial data but not sure where to start with Google Earth Engine?

Join us for a free, hands-on online workshop introducing Google Earth Engine (GEE), a cloud-based platform for accessing, processing, analyzing, and visualizing large collections of satellite imagery and geospatial datasets.

Participants will be introduced to the Earth Engine interface and work through a practical remote sensing workflow using publicly available satellite imagery. The workshop will demonstrate how cloud-based geospatial processing can simplify tasks that would otherwise require downloading, storing, and processing large volumes of imagery locally.

Using a guided example, participants will learn how to search image collections, define an area of interest, filter imagery by location and date, create map visualizations, and calculate a common vegetation index.

What You’ll Learn

During the workshop, participants will learn how to:

  • Navigate the Google Earth Engine Code Editor
  • Explore Earth Engine’s geospatial data catalogue
  • Define and visualize an area of interest
  • Access and filter satellite imagery by location and date
  • Filter imagery based on cloud cover
  • Create true- and false-colour satellite image composites
  • Work with image collections and create simple mosaics
  • Calculate and visualize the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)
  • Create simple charts to explore changes in vegetation
  • Export basic results for use in other GIS or remote sensing software

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is open to students, researchers, faculty, professionals, and anyone interested in remote sensing, GIS, satellite imagery, or environmental applications.

The workshop is designed for beginners, and no previous experience with Google Earth Engine is required. Basic familiarity with GIS or remote sensing concepts may be helpful but is not necessary.

Participants will need access to a Google Earth Engine account and a web browser. Instructions for accessing Earth Engine will be provided to registered participants before the workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop if they would like to follow along with the hands-on exercises during the workshop.
