Day 15 — October 30, 2006 — Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Serengeti National Park

Leaving the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge we tore down the rim road in the fog but as we reached the plain the fog lifted and we got good views of the Masai villages. Arriving at Olduvai_Gorge we explored the museum and surrounding area then made our way to the major discovery site (Not that anyone cares I noted the plaque date was about the time I first met my wife.)

.

The Olduvai Gorge is commonly referred to as "The Cradle of Mankind." It is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world and has been instrumental in furthering understanding of early human evolution.

.

The road into Serengeti National Park was long rough and dusty but eventually we came to the gate where we had a chance to investigate kopjes and procure refreshments before going on to the Serengeti Sopa Lodge for a late lunch and an introduction to the park. Then, at 4, it was time to take to the field for a game drive.
Kopje consist of very old granite rock which, because of erosion and weathering, has broken up into a rough and jumbled surface. In the open grasslands, where the countryside has been more or less leveled off by deposits of dust and ash from volcanoes of the Rift, kopjes stand out against the surrounding plain.

We stopped at a couple of kopjes. The first featured a boulder drum used by the Masai to call the people together. The second was to view rock drawings.

.

That evening our dower looking group came alive when Kimberly was presented with a birthday cake (African hardtack recipe) and pieces were distributed to all.
