Day 14 — October 29, 2006 — Ngorongoro Crater
After taking some early morning photos at the lodge we descended into the crater and at noon ate our lunch at the designated picnic site. Here we were warned to eat our box lunch inside our vehicles as the kites will swoop down and take our food. With the roof of our 4-wheel drive open little masked weavers perched above us just in case an opportunity arose.
The Ngorongoro crater is the largest unbroken caldera in the world. A caldera is formed by the collapse of a volcano into itself, making it a large, special form of volcano The Ngorongoro crater. is 14 miles (22.5 km) across at its widest point and 2000 ft (610 m) deep.

Since the area has an unbroken rim it has it's own ecosystem. Over 75,000 wild animals live in the caldera but there are only male elephants as the area is unable to support the family. Periodically, the male elephants go up to the rim to meet their lady friends.

Following our afternoon game drive we enjoyed another fine meal at the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge.

Some of our new friends — a warthog and hartebeests
