Prerequisites for Direct Entry - Transfer Students

For students transferring in from other institutions, there are a number requirements that must be satisfied before entering the Faculty of Education. The following is a list of those requirements:

A. Number of Courses

You must have successfully completed at least 20 transferable courses. Official transcripts must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office by the document deadline of June 1. Courses indicating the final grade must be listed on the official transcript when being used for admission.

B. Subject Majors

You must have successfully completed the minimum designated number of courses in a teaching subject major as listed below:

1. Art - Eight semester courses in Art

2. CTS - Focus is still an Education major and must remain as point

3. Drama - Eight semester courses in Drama

4. English - Eight semester courses in English OR eleven Humanities courses from three areas including five in English

5. Mathematics - Eight semester courses in Mathematics, Computing and Statistics, OR eleven Science courses from three areas including five in Mathematics/Statistics

6. Modern Languages - Eight semester courses in either French or German OR a combination of 8 courses in French/German or French/Spanish.

7. Music - Eight semester courses in Music

8. Native Education - Eight semester courses in Native American Studies OR eleven Social Science courses from three areas including five from Native American Studies. (Five courses in a teachable school subject is also required.)

9. Physical Education - Eight semester courses in Kinesiology/Physical Activity, OR eleven Social Science courses in three areas including five in Kinesiology

10. Science - Eight semester courses in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, or Physical Geography, OR eleven courses from three Science areas including five in either Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Physical Geography. (Two of the three areas must be school Science subjects.)

11. Social Studies - Eight semester courses in Anthropology, Economics, History, Geography, Political Science or Sociology, OR eleven Social Science courses from three areas including five in either Anthropology, Economics, History, Geography, Political Science or Sociology.

C. Education 2500 - Orientation to Teaching

Before coming into the Faculty of Education you must successfully complete ED 2500 or its equivalent transfer course. See this link for more information and waiver forms: Education 2500 Details

D. Writing Proficiency Requirement

This can be met in any one of the following ways:

  • obtaining a grade of 75% or higher on the English 30 or English Language Arts 30-1 Alberta Diploma Exam
  • obtaining a final grade of 80% or higher in English 30 or English Language Arts 30-1, or an equivalent from any province
  • passing the Alberta Universities' Writing Competency Test (AUWCT). It is your responsibility to have your grade forwarded to the Language Centre, U of L, 329-2053.
  • obtaining a "B" (3.0) grade or better in a university or transferable English course or Writing 1000.
  • obtaining a passing grade in the "Writing for University" course.
  • completion of University of Calgary Effective Writing Requirement with a minimum grade of "B" (3.0).

E. Grade Point Average

  • You must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale to be eligible to compete for admission (see Special Admission Routes below)
  • All courses are used to calculate this average not just your last one or two years.
  • On a 9 point scale, a 2.5 = 6.0
  • As a letter grade, 2.5 = B- average
  • As a percentage, 2.5 ranges from 67% (if 50% is a pass) to 71% (if 60% is a pass).

F. Special Admission Requirements

  • Drama - must submit a performance portfolio and attend an audition and interview.
  • Music - must attend a performance audition and interview and prepare a written paper and music resume
  • Native Education - must have 5 courses completed in a school subject minor.
  • Physical Education - must submit a Physical Education and Sport Activities Report.
