Wednesday, Aug. 1 marks the first ever annual RNA Day, a celebration of the vital biological molecule, ribonucleic acid. RNA is a close relative of the commonly known molecule, DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), and they, along with protein, are the three major biological molecules required for life.

Parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may search for an alternative to the stimulant medication that is typically prescribed for the disorder, but the effectiveness of alternative approaches hasn’t been well established. Dr. Brenda Leung, assistant professor and the Emmy Droog Chair of Complementary and Alternative Healthcare at the University of Lethbridge’s Faculty of Health Sciences, hopes to change that with a new study that’s the first of its kind in North America.

Drs. Olga and Igor Kovalchuk at the University of Lethbridge, in collaboration with researchers at Qiqihar Medical University in China, the University of Michigan and Boston University, have shown for the first time that interactions between microRNAs, which are very small ribonucleic acid molecules, and transfer RNA (tRNA) can affect cell reproduction and cell death.

Eager campers will top-off their week of learning with a trip to a cattle ranch Destination Exploration, in collaboration with Carlson Cattle Company and Dr. Lorraine Beaudin, will be offering its very first Farm Camp – July 23-27. The Government of Canada announced Monday that the University of Lethbridge, in partnership with the Université de Sherbrooke, has been awarded $1.65 million over the span of six years to develop the RNA Bioengineering and Innovation Network Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE). Aerial and ground crews from the University of Lethbridge have launched a large campaign that will conduct multiple surveys in Alberta and the Northwest Territories to measure ecosystem changes associated with climate change and permafrost loss and to build understanding of the role of wildfire. Dr. Chris Hopkinson, a geography professor with expertise in LiDAR (light detection and ranging), will lead the aerial portion of the campaign while Dr. Laura Chasmer, also a U of L geography professor, leads the ground campaign.

A research collaboration between Dr. Bruce McNaughton’s lab at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience at the University of Lethbridge and Dr. Vincent Bonin’s lab at the Neuro-Electronics Research Flanders (NERF, VIB-KU Leuven-imec) in Belgium has provided new insight into how the brain learns about the environment and why the hippocampus, a key part of the brain, is so important in this process.

The Girl Guides, the world’s largest voluntary organization for girls, has its roots in the early 20th century, a time of rapid social change when more than a few adults were wringing their hands about the future.
