Three University of Lethbridge students have cooked up an idea that will bring Syrian culture to the broader Lethbridge community while helping newcomer women integrate — the newly formed catering business Jeeran55.

The Government of Canada announced Monday that the University of Lethbridge, in partnership with the Université de Sherbrooke, has been awarded $1.65 million over the span of six years to develop the RNA Bioengineering and Innovation Network Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE). Aerial and ground crews from the University of Lethbridge have launched a large campaign that will conduct multiple surveys in Alberta and the Northwest Territories to measure ecosystem changes associated with climate change and permafrost loss and to build understanding of the role of wildfire. Dr. Chris Hopkinson, a geography professor with expertise in LiDAR (light detection and ranging), will lead the aerial portion of the campaign while Dr. Laura Chasmer, also a U of L geography professor, leads the ground campaign.

A research collaboration between Dr. Bruce McNaughton’s lab at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience at the University of Lethbridge and Dr. Vincent Bonin’s lab at the Neuro-Electronics Research Flanders (NERF, VIB-KU Leuven-imec) in Belgium has provided new insight into how the brain learns about the environment and why the hippocampus, a key part of the brain, is so important in this process.

The Girl Guides, the world’s largest voluntary organization for girls, has its roots in the early 20th century, a time of rapid social change when more than a few adults were wringing their hands about the future.
