On September 30, the University of Lethbridge will recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day provides members of our community time and space to reflect on the multigenerational impacts of residential schools.

Usually, we argue when we disagree, we argue against each other. We want to show our partner we are right, and they are wrong — and we want to show them this by demonstrating we have the better reasons on our side.

The University of Lethbridge will observe the new National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Thursday, Sept. 30. On June 3, 2021, the federal government passed legislation that designates September 30 of each year as a public holiday under the Canada Labour Code. The University’s decision to observe this new holiday, although not required by law, is consistent with the University’s commitment to Indigenization, and specifically the Truth and Reconciliation process.

A University of Lethbridge project is one of 332 research infrastructure projects to receive support through the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF), as announced today by the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. More than $77 million in funding will go to projects at 50 Canadian universities.

Students and community members from the Siksika Nation will soon be learning about sustainable food production thanks to a collaborative greenhouse research project between Old Sun Community College (OSCC) and the University of Lethbridge. On Friday, July 23, the U of L signed a research agreement with OSCC. This two-year partnership will provide opportunities for OSCC students and Siksika Nation members to learn more about science and technology applications — and engage in traditional educational opportunities for food security and sustainable food production.

Approaching the four-year anniversary of the Kenow Wildfire in Waterton Lakes National Park, a new study by University of Lethbridge undergraduate student Sam Gerrand sheds light on how much carbon dioxide was released into the atmosphere from the event and how this data may be utilized going forward.
