University of Lethbridge professor Dr. Paul Hayes has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. This is among the highest honours bestowed to chemists and a first for the University of Lethbridge.
“It’s a humbling group to be a member of,” says Hayes. “I was surprised and honoured. The Royal Society of Chemistry is based in the United Kingdom and it has a very prestigious history that goes back 175 years.”

A new study by a University of Lethbridge water researcher has found that challenges in acquiring water have housing developers in the Calgary region worried about the effects on their industry and real estate, on home buyers and the economy in general.
“What struck me about the findings was that all housing developers in the study said challenges exist in acquiring licensed water allocations for housing development and for three-quarters of them, it is their biggest issue,” says Dr. Lorraine Nicol, a U of L research associate.

Dr. Susan McDaniel, a University of Lethbridge sociology professor, has been chosen as one of three top finalists in the Insight Award category of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s (SSHRC) 2016 Impact Awards.
“I extend my respect and congratulations to Susan, whose career is one most of us aspire to but few of us achieve,” says Dr. Claudia Malacrida, associate vice-president of research. “This is a real coup; a quick glance at the history of this award reveals that recipients have primarily come from five institutions in the country.”

Dr. John Ziker, Chair of the anthropology department at Boise State University in Idaho, will be spending the fall semester at the University of Lethbridge as the Fulbright Canada-Palix Foundation Distinguished Visiting Research Chair in Brain Science, and Child and Family Health and Wellness.

“If you apply to attend uLethbridge for fall 2017, either before or at Open House, and you attend Open House, you will receive a pair of U of L virtual reality goggles,” says Natasha Buis Deering (BA ’02), director of enrolment services.
