Research by Drs. Laura Chasmer and Chris Hopkinson, University of Lethbridge geography professors, indicates that the 1997–1998 El Niño may have served as a tipping point for accelerating permafrost loss in their study area in the Northwest Territories.
The study, Threshold loss of discontinuous permafrost and landscape evolution, has been published in the latest issue of the prestigious journal Global Change Biology.

The 50 Voices oral history project has woven a tapestry of perspectives about the University of Lethbridge over the past 50 years. From the early days, when Dr. Van Christou (LLD ’84) worked to convince the provincial government of the need for a university in Lethbridge, to the turn of the century, when Dr. Bryan Kolb was shocked but pleased by then-president Dr. Howard Tennant’s promise to construct a neuroscience building, the project captures the U of L’s impressive emergence as a leading university.

Created as a scholarship fund, all money raised for the Shine On: U of L 50th Anniversary Fund goes directly to support student scholarships, providing greater opportunities for student success.

Now that the University of Lethbridge has officially reached the age of 50, celebrations to mark the occasion are in order.
“We are inviting everyone with a connection to the U of L to participate in the many celebrations we have planned to commemorate our 50th anniversary,” says Dr. Chris Hosgood, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and co-chair of the 50th Anniversary Committee. “If not for the support of the community, this university may have never broken ground. We want to acknowledge the determination and commitment of our founders to make this institution a reality.”

The University of Lethbridge community and its extended partners have come together to help make the Christmas season a little brighter for U of L students by stocking the shelves and raising more than $12,000 for the University of Lethbridge Students’ Union (ULSU) Food Bank.
The food and fundraising drive has helped to ensure that U of L students will not be turned away in their time of need and can continue to pursue their academic goals.
