The impacts of two years of primarily online learning and living through a global pandemic have affected all students.

A positive trend has been developing at the University of Lethbridge as more and more Indigenous students are earning post-secondary degrees, culminating with a record 99 graduates crossing the stage at the 2021/22 convocation ceremonies.

This week, the University of Lethbridge will celebrate the achievements of three graduating classes with an unprecedented six, in-person convocation ceremonies over three days. A total of 1,220 students will cross the stage at Spring 2022 Convocation, including 934 from the class of 2022 and another 286 students from the 2020 and 2021 graduating classes. Past graduands have accepted the invitation to return to campus to walk the stage having missed the experience due to COVID-19 limitations that necessitated online ceremonies.

A collaboration between a University of Lethbridge graduate student, two highly specialized ULethbridge research labs and the University of Vienna has determined the three-dimensional structure of a specific long noncoding RNA molecule involved in cancer suppression and gene regulation.

An inspiring educator who finds ways to challenge her students while complementing their knowledge, new media professor Leanne Elias is this year’s recipient of the Board of Governors Teaching Chair. Elias plans to develop and deliver a series of interdisciplinary workshops for both undergraduate and graduate students with the goal of understanding how teaching changes when working with multiple disciplines and how students are impacted. While Board of Governors Teaching Chair, she also intends to bring together a community of practice for interdisciplinary teaching.

Strong and resilient are two terms that barely scratch the surface when describing former Olympic athlete, trauma survivor and inspiring Indigenous speaker Waneek Horn-Miller, who will be presented with a University of Lethbridge honorary degree at Spring 2022 Convocation.

Started as a one-week science camp and a handful of school workshops in 2002, Destination Exploration (DE) has blossomed into the flagship STEM youth outreach program in southern Alberta. On Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University of Lethbridge Science Commons Atrium, DE will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a family-friendly open house.
