Internationally renowned performance and installation artist James Luna (Puyukitchum/Luiseno) resides on the La Jolla Indian Reservation in North County San Diego, California. With over 30 years of exhibition and performance experience Luna has given voice to Native American cultural issues, pursued innovative and versatile media within his disciplines, and charted waters for other artists to follow.

ART NOW - Echo + Seashell Speak September 30th, 2016 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Echo + Seashell was founded in 2011 by artists Henna Hyvärinen (Finland) and Susan Kooi (Netherlands) when they met at an art-student residency in Germany. Performing in venues ranging from concert halls to art spaces, the duo is interested in how they can fit into the existing locales they come to occupy through their creative practice. Utilizing film screening paired with live performance, echo + seashell seek to create site-specific experiences for viewers around the world and have performed at various locations across Finland, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany.

ART NOW - Hyang Cho Speaks October 14th, 2016 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Hyang Cho was born and grew up in Seoul, Korea, and studied history at Sogang University in Seoul. After moving to Canada in 2002, she enrolled in the Alberta College of Art + Design in Calgary. She also completed a Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Guelph. Recent exhibitions include Counterpoint, Modern Fuel in Kingston, Ephemeral Frontiers, Design at Riverside in Cambridge, Nothing Much, Georgia Scherman Projects in Toronto, and In the Making, Illingworth Kerr Gallery in Calgary.Cho currently lives and works in Guelph, Ontario.

ART NOW - Chris Fritton Speaks October 12th, 2016 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Chris Fritton is the former Studio Director of the Western New York Book Arts Center. A poet, printer, and fine artist, Fritton has over a decade of experience writing, printing, and making his own books, in addition to collaborative efforts with other authors and artists. Recently (2014) he was selected as a panelist to judge the New York Foundation on the Arts Fellowship in Drawing, Printmaking, and Book Arts. He co-founded the highly-acclaimed Buffalo Small Press Book Fair with Kevin Thurston in 2007, and has been organizing the fair solo since 2009 (the Fair is now in its 10th year).

ART NOW - Karin Van Dam Speaks October 7th, 2016 at Noon in the Recital Hall

The room-filling installations are like fantasy cities that you can wander around in.

Van Dam herself is a traveller, constantly on a journey of exploration.

She happens on here building materials by chance:

tubes and drainage pipes, building plastic and sheets of rubber, wool and balloons.

These found objects then form the palette of new temporary installations and works

she constructs in unusual spots: in a museum, on the roof of a building or on a street corner.

ART NOW - Ed Pien Speaks October 5th, 2016 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Ed Pien has shown work at the Drawing Centre; the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; The Canadian Culture Centre, Paris; The Goethe Institute, Berlin; AGO, Toronto; Musée des beaux arts and Musée d’art contemporain, Montreal; Songzhuang Art Centre, Beijing; and the National Art Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Oboro, Montreal. He has participated in the 2000 and 2002 Montreal Biennales; the 18th Edition of the Sydney Biennale, "Oh Canada", at MASS MoCA. Pien also presented work at the 5th Edition of the Moscow Biennale, in 2013, and at the Beijing Biennale, in 2015.
