Anthropology and Art – what can they learn from each other?

Based on collaborative work with his late wife, Gordana Zivkovic and the pedagogy he has developed for teaching ethnographic sensibility through exercises based on art training, dr. Zivkovic will explore some ways anthropology and art can learn from each other.

ART NOW - Jeneen Frei Njootli Speaks September 27th, 2017 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Jeneen Frei Njootli is a member of the self-governing Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation and is a co-creator of the ReMatriate Collective. She has been living as an uninvited guest in the unceded, ancestral lands and waters of the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Stó:lō peoples for around a decade. Working collaboratively with artists, communities, youth, and the land, Frei Njootli’s practice takes the shape of sound, performance, fashion, workshops and barbecues.

ART NOW - Tracey-Mae Chambers Speaks September 20th, 2017 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Tracey-Mae Chambers is a Métis artist living in Southern Ontario. Her practice mainly focusses on encaustic as a 3D medium as well as installation work. She tries to work exclusively with natural materials as she feels that respect for the Mother Earth is paramount. Her installation work speaks to our connection to and disconnect from the natural world.

In her talk, Chambers discusses her installation work and pushing the boundaries of a medium’s expected output.

ART NOW - Annie Martin Speaks March 22nd, 2017 at Noon at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery

“Nothing but an open mouth, or perhaps an eye, an ear: nothing but an open body. Bodies are adoration in all their openings.” 

Annie Martin will discuss her recent project, adoration, at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, within the installation space. adoration was created in collaboration with soprano Janet Youngdahl, with the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts, The Banff Centre for the Arts and OBORO.
