ART NOW - Joseph Tisiga Speaks January 29th, 2018 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Bladder Head Boy and Parallel Non-Sequiturs

Joseph Tisiga (b.1984) is a multidisciplinary artist and community worker currently living in Whitehorse, Yukon. He is Kaska Dena First Nation and of mixed European heritage. Tisiga utilizes multiple means to stimulate narrative thematics, including performance, photography, sculpture, installation, however painting and drawing are the foundation of his practice. His work examines notions of identity, cultural and social inheritance/dislocation, the mundane, “metaphysical” and mythological.

ART NOW - Dagmara Genda Speaks February 2nd, 2018 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Dagmara Genda is an artist and writer currently working in Berlin. Born in Poland and raised in Canada, her frequent moves have made her drawing practice responsive to the different environments she finds herself in. Current and upcoming shows include a group exhibition at Modern Fuel (Kingston) and a solo exhibition at ace art inc. (Winnipeg). Genda has exhibited at the Arp Museum (Remagen, Germany) Walter Phillips Gallery (Banff), the Esker Foundation (Calgary) and Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, amongst others. Her writing has appeared in Momus, Border Crossings and esse.

ART NOW - Katie Bruce Speaks January 24th, 2018 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Katie Marie Bruce is an artist and educator, working primarily in printmaking, who recently relocated to Lethbridge from Toronto. She received her MFA from York University in 2015, where her thesis work examining empathy, "felt knowledge" was supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. She has presented her work across Canada, in exhibitions, residencies, and projects, and is presenting a new body of work for 'surface to surface,' a two person exhibition with Christie Kirchner at Alberta Printmakers Gallery in Calgary, on January 5th, 2018.

ART NOW - Meryl McMaster Speaks January 19th, 2018 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Visual artist Meryl McMaster will discuss her artistic practice as well as the works within her traveling solo exhibition “Confluence” first shown by Heather Anderson in 2016 at the Carleton University Art Gallery. The exhibition brings together photographic works from three bodies of work titled Ancestral (2008-10), In-Between Worlds (2010-15) and Wanderings (2015).

ART NOW - Julie Duschenes Speaks January 17th, 2018 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Through composition, colour, value and the physicality of paint, I work towards tension; to see without foreknowledge, to construct anew what is in front of me, to hold my seeing in the a priori.

Content lives in the process of seeing and, therefore, in the process of art-making.

Julie Duschenes received her BFA from NSCAD in 1975, and her MFA from UBC in 1981.  She is currently engaged in an ongoing art practice.
