Tunnel & South Plaza Rehabilitation

April 2013

Construction fencing and snow fencing will be placed around the site. Entrances highlighted in red (See image below) indicate door closures for the duration of the project. Entrances highlighted in green (PE Building) indicate temporary public access.

Pedestrians traveling from the Library to the Students’ Union Building, Max Bell Aquatic Centre or Wellness Centre are encouraged to use the pathway north of the Library to the northern building entrances.

Vehicular traffic will be directed through Lot D. Public transit stops will be moved back towards the Library entrance (highlighted in pink).

Due to construction both inside the tunnel and on the plaza, the tunnel will be closed for the duration of the project starting in May.
Level 1 door closures are outlined in the image below.

From May to December, the area from the PE Building along the Students’ Union Building up to the rotunda near the library will be closed. The tunnel will be closed for the majority of the project.

Surrounding buildings will have intermittent access. Detour signage will be posted around the project area.

Pedestrians traveling from the Library to the upper campus are encouraged to use the pathways north of the Library to the northern building entrances.

The PE Tunnel Rehabilitation project will see to the needed infrastructure upgrades, including repairing tunnel leaks and installing better lighting and air ventilation systems.

Replacing the concrete in the South Plaza will be a unique challenge as the tunnel sits directly below and no more than 10,000 lbs. can be placed on top of it. Removing the concrete slabs above the tunnel will require some creative maneuvering.

The tunnel and plaza closure also affects public transit. A temporary bus stop will be moved back to the south east corner of the Aperture loop. All traffic will be directed through Lot D.
