Life Balance Fair

Wednesday, Oct. 30, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., indoor track, 1st Choice Savings Centre

October is Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month and U of L Wellness & Recognition is hosting the Life Balance Fair to help people explore ways of finding balance in their personal and professional lives. More than 60 exhibitors will be available, including a flu immunization clinic, St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs, a Pound fitness class demo and a mini Escape from LA, along with food and prizes.

A Nightmare on Shred Street 4 — The Shred Master

Thursday, Oct. 31, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., west bus loading zone outside of the 1st Choice Savings Centre

Identity theft and fraud are nightmares indeed, and they are among the fastest growing crimes in Canada. People can protect themselves by safely disposing of items like bank statements, credit card bills, utility bills, pay stubs, medical records and store receipts. This annual shredding event is sponsored by U of L Information Technology Services in partnership with Lethbridge Mobile Shredding. People can bring in their personal papers for shredding, hard drives for degaussing and electronics for recycling. Students’ Union staff will be on hand to collect donations of cash and non-perishable food items for the campus food bank.

Halloween Costume Contest

Thursday, Oct. 31, noon to 1 p.m., Science Commons Atrium, Level 7

The U of L community has some very creative types who’ll be using their skills and talents to come up with ghostly, ghastly, ghoulish, gruesome garb in the hopes of scaring up a prize for the best solo costume or best group costume.

Art NOW — Killmonger at the Museum: What a Hollywood Blockbuster Can Tell Us About Institutions These Days

Friday, Nov. 1, noon to 12:50 p.m., W570, Recital Hall

Museums have been challenged in recent years to account for who and what they show and who’s footing the bill. Starting with a key scene from Black Panther, Aruna D’Souza, who writes about modern and contemporary art, will explore the ways institutions are being asked to transform themselves as formerly excluded groups are staking their claims.

southernAB19 Exhibition

Friday, Nov. 1, 7 p.m. to Friday, Nov. 15, 4 p.m., Dr. Foster James Penny Building, 324 5 St. S.

The work of U of L New Media students in Dr. A. William Smith’s classes, as well as works from the instructor, will be featured in this exhibition which opens at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1. Their digital artworks, based on imagery in southern Alberta during September and October, will be on display in the Penny Gallery and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday until Friday, Nov. 15. On Sunday, Nov. 3 from 1 to 3:30 p.m., the gallery is open for a screening of short animations.

Opera Workshop Presents Viva Italia

Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2, W570, Recital Hall

Audiences will be treated to staged excerpts from some of the most beloved and celebrated operas of all time, including Verdi’s La Traviata, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, as well as a few unexpected Italian-inspired gems.

Spooky Science 2019

Saturday, Nov. 2, 1 to 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 8 p.m., Science Commons Atrium

Children aged six to 12 get to enjoy more fun after Halloween with Spooky Science. Every year, U of L students who volunteer with Let’s Talk Science organize fun, hands-on science activities like firing a vortex cannon, making ghostly boo bubbles and brewing potions to inspire students to pursue careers in science and increase public access to science.
