Psychology Colloquium Series — Cognitive Biases about Alcohol and Drugs

Monday, April 4, 11 a.m. to noon, C620 University Hall

Guest speaker Dr. Marvin Krank, a psychology professor at UBC Okanagan, will discuss how substance use is the main cause of the mental and physical health problems experienced by teens. Research has shown that social influence from parents, peers and popular media frequently leads to cognitive biases. Teens often overestimate how much and how often others use alcohol and drugs, have unrealistic positive expectancies about the effects of substance use and have implicit substance use associations. Krank will also talk about how new prevention approaches can target cognitive biases.
