Headshave — Kappa Sigma Fraternity 2019
Monday, April 1, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Atrium, University Hall
Tons of tousled tresses will tumble in the 13th annual Kappa Sigma Fraternity Headshave. The group has partnered with the Alberta Cancer Foundation and all proceeds will go to the Jack Ady Cancer Centre in Lethbridge. Kappa Sigma has raised more than $250,000 over the years and this year’s goal is $25,000.

Music at Noon — Studio Showcase

In this final recital of the semester, music students will be featured, including Anna Bosgra, tuba; Joel Goodfellow, piano; Richelle Lazaro, soprano; Theo Lysyk, marimba; Tate Orlita, piano; Gerald Rogers, bass trombone, and Caleigh Seitz, soprano.

Last Lecture

Everyone is welcome to attend and find out what wisdom three professors would impart to the world if they knew it was their last chance. Drs. Chris Hosgood, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Michelle Helstein, a kinesiology and physical education professor, and Steven Urquhart, Chair of the Department of Modern Languages, will each deliver their own brand of wisdom. Along with their talks, the ULSU Teaching Awards will be announced.

U of L Wind Orchestra Concert
Thursday, April 4, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., W500, University Theatre
Under the direction of Dr. Chee Meng Low, the U of L Wind Orchestra pushes the boundaries of wind band performance. In addition to performing at convocation ceremonies and in collaborative concerts with school groups and community bands, this talented group has also competed in a Wind Orchestra Concerto competition.

Women Academic Leaders: Some Challenges

Dr. Jane O’Dea, professor and dean emerita of education, returns to the U of L to give a 30-minute talk on being female in senior academic administration. Dr. Susan McDaniel, sociology professor and director of the Prentice Institute, will then discuss the challenges of being a woman leader in research, followed by Dr. Shelly Wismath, professor and dean of the School of Liberal Education, discussing the challenges of being a woman leader in teaching.

Anatomy of a Global Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness

In his book Anatomy of an Epidemic, Robert Whitaker asks why the number of Americans who receive government disability for mental illness has roughly doubled in the past 30 years. He looks at the development of antipsychotic, benzodiazepine and antidepressant medication and the effects of their long-term use.

Integra Contemporary Electroacoustics Ensemble presents The Silent Game Project

The U of L’s newest ensemble, Integra Contemporary Electroacoustics Ensemble (ICE) takes music to another level. The evening’s program invites audience members to explore the limits of electroacoustic sound grooves and beats, improvisation and performance art. The evening features original student compositions and improvisations for laptop computer ensemble, invented digital instruments, experimental sound and light, and live coding.
