Dr. Claudia Malacrida, associate vice-president (research) at the University of Lethbridge, was one of nine panelists who participated in Canada’s Fundamental Science Review, serves on the Federation of Social Science and Humanities Board of Directors, and serves on the governing council for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
Following is her reaction to today’s Federal Budget announcement and specifically funding as it relates to scientific research.

As part of a tour for her new book Following the River, Traces of Red River Women, Dr. Lorri Neilsen Glenn will stop at the U of L on Feb. 27 to speak to students in the Faculty of Education and do an evening public reading.
Neilsen Glenn, professor emerita at Mount Saint Vincent University and former Poet Laureate for Halifax, lived in Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan before moving to Nova Scotia in 1983. She is the author and editor of 14 books of poetry, nonfiction and scholarly work.

Dr. Claudia Malacrida, University of Lethbridge associate vice-president (research), joins 14 other diverse Canadians in being appointed to the governing council of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
Kirsty Duncan, Canada’s science minister, announced the appointments to SSHRC, the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports post-secondary research and research training in the humanities and social sciences, in Ottawa this week.

Local youth involved in the criminal justice system are being referred to a program where they learn to play chess as part of their sentence. The Chess for Life program is a University of Lethbridge research project that aims to explore how learning to play chess affects youths’ thinking and the choices they make every day.
