Program Changes

Changes to existing programs require approval at various University Governance committees. Program changes requiring internal approvals can include:

  • Name changes to programs and majors
  • Adding, updating, or removing program courses
  • Changes to credit hour requirements
  • Changes to program requirements
  • Program or major suspensions or terminations
  • Changes to academic standing or admission criteria

Many changes to existing programs also require approval from the Ministry of Advanced Education before implementation. All program changes must receive internal approvals before being submitted to the Ministry. Program changes that require ministerial approval include:

  • Name changes to programs and majors
  • Substantively adding, updating, or removing program courses*
  • Changes to work integrated learning requirements
  • Changes to practicum hours or requirements
  • Changes to program-level credit hour requirements
  • Program or major suspensions or terminations**

It is important to connect with staff in the Office of the Provost when making changes to programs and majors to confirm whether ministerial approval will be required.

*Changes to 5 or more core course requirements in a major will likely require ministerial approval. Changes to 40% or more of the overall curriculum may be considered a new program and require a new program proposal.
**In most cases a program must be suspended for three to five years prior to termination.
