Advisory — Panel discussion featuring University of Lethbridge experts examining what is patriotism

What is Patriotism? That is the question a group of five University of Lethbridge experts will consider during a special panel discussion to be held Wednesday, Feb. 26, 3 to 5 p.m. in SA6012 (Science Commons).

The experts, from different disciplinary perspectives, include Drs. Mike Bruised Head, John von Heyking, Katharina Stevens and Susan Dieleman, with Dr. Harold Jansen as moderator. They’ll discuss what it means to be patriotic in this historical moment.

• Is patriotism a good thing? A bad thing? If it depends, what does it depend on?

• Are there better or worse ways of being patriotic?

• Is patriotism strategically important right now? What might be some negative consequences of the current wave of Canadian patriotism?

• Does patriotism make sense / how might it look from Indigenous perspectives?

• Does patriotism require fixed national borders and legitimate political institutions?

• Does patriotism presume an idealized past that has never existed?

This free event is open to the public.
