Women Scholars’ Speaker Series — “I thought perhaps you’d like to know the story from the inside”

Dr. Lee Talley, dean of the Bantivoglio Honors Concentration and associate professor of English at Rowan University in New Jersey, will discuss how British child evacuees composed themselves in writing during the Second World War.

Wellness Lunch & Learn — Mental Health and Nutrition

Dr. Bonnie Kaplan, professor emerita at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, will discuss the growing body of scientific research that shows the importance of nutrition for brain health and mental function.

Project Sandbox — Cardboard Robot Jousting

Workshop participants will create a robot out of cardboard and then joust or race with other robots.

Christian Guay-Poliquin talks about his novel The Weight of Snow
Friday, Sept. 20, noon to 1 p.m., D632, University Hall
Christian Guay-Poliquin won the Governor General’s Award for French fiction with his second novel Le poids de la neige, which was later translated in English. While post-apocalyptic fiction informs his work, Guay-Poliquin looks to explore the strengths and fragility of human relations. His storytelling is intimately connected with real life and a meticulous attention to detail. The presentation will be in English.

Social Justice Symposium
Friday, Sept. 20, noon to 4:30, Students’ Union ballrooms
Jackson Leween 2Bears, a multimedia installation/performance artist and cultural theorist with the Faculty of Fine Arts, will start things off at the third annual Social Justice Symposium with a keynote talk. Research gaps between agricultural systems analysis & food security

Dr. Emma Stevens, a bio-economist at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre, is investigating the economics of technology adoption in different agricultural enterprises and the relationships between agricultural systems and food security in Canada.
