PUBlic Professor Series — The Benefits and Risks of Artificial Intelligence

Thursday, Nov. 21, 7 to 9 p.m., Sandman Signature Lethbridge Lodge, 320 Scenic Dr. S.

Dr. Jackie Rice, computer science professor, will explore the benefits of recent advances in artificial intelligence and the risk these advances present to society.

Harley Hotchkiss Memorial Lecture — Encoding and Transmitting Affective States

Friday, Nov. 22, 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., SA6008, Science Commons

Dr. Jaideep Bains, a professor of physiology and pharmacology at the University of Calgary, will discuss how humans detect the emotional or affective state of others. The inability to accurately detect and respond to the emotions of others is a feature of several developmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. Bains’ research findings suggest the detection of negative affective states in others is controlled by cells that coordinate the brain’s response to stress.

Philosophy Department Colloquium Series — Doing Clinical Ethics with Philosophy

Friday, Nov. 22, 3 to 4 p.m., D634, University Hall

Eric Mathison, Alberta Health Service’s clinical ethicist, will describe what it’s like to be a clinical ethicist and some of the difficult cases he’s encountered. As a clinical ethicist, his task is to identify ethical issues in health care and improve them, both at the case and the system levels.

Department of History Colloquium — You are on Indian Land

Friday, Nov. 22, 3 to 4:30 p.m., C640, University Hall

Dr. Paul McKenzie-Jones, a U of L Indigenous Studies professor, will describe how two acts by the United States government ended freedom of movement across the U.S.-Canadian border for Indigenous people in both settler nations. McKenzie-Jones will look at the arguments Indigenous activists have used in the last 100 years to push back against the legitimacy of the Canada-U.S. border. Policing of the border intersects multiple Indigenous territories which pre-date European settlement.

This session of SAMWAK, a community speaker series hosted by the Department of Women & Gender Studies, features Sara Al-Mahbshi, a master’s candidate, talking about the rise of Houthis in Yemen and relations with Iran, and Taylor Blais, a psychology student, who will talk about lessons learned in women’s and human rights during an internship in the South Pacific.
