Consciousness & Its Place in Nature

Monday, March 2, 6:30 p.m., BMO Auditorium, Level 7, Science Commons

Dr. Giulio Tonini, a world leader in the field of consciousness studies, will give a public lecture where he’ll discuss his model of consciousness called Integrated Information Theory. Tonini will talk about what determines the quality and quantity of consciousness, how it emerges from causal structures such as neural networks and how unconscious processes interact with conscious ones.

Indigenous Awareness Days 2020

Monday, March 2 to Thursday, March 19, various times and locations

Opening ceremonies kick off Indigenous Awareness Days on Monday, March 2 at 11:30 a.m. in the University Hall atrium. A powwow dance demonstration is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, a panel discussion on the Wet’suwet’en and the right to assert Indigenous sovereignty goes from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in AH100 (Andy’s Place). Pronghorns Scholarship Breakfast

Tuesday, March 3, 7 to 9 a.m., 1st Choice Savings Centre gym

Olympic athlete Meaghan Mikkelson is currently in her 12th season as a defenceman with the Canadian National Women’s Hockey Team. She has two gold medals from the 2010 and 2014 Olympic Winter Games, a silver medal from the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, in addition to numerous other medals earned in women’s world championships. She hopes to represent Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

Art NOW — Do Art Museums Really “Just Show the Best Art?”

Wednesday, March 4, noon, W570, Recital Hall

In her talk, Dr. Anne Dymond, a U of L professor, will discuss who gets exhibitions in Canadian art galleries, who remains under-represented and why galleries typically resist hard data about the politics of inclusion and exclusion. Her work reveals most large Canadian art galleries still significantly under-represent racialized and female-identified artists.

STEM Fusion Conference: Where Academics & Industry in STEM Collide

Thursday, March 5, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Science Commons Atrium, Level 7

Students, researchers and industry leaders in STEM fields have the opportunity to form new collaborations, network and create connections at STEM Fusion. Participants will learn from a series of guest speakers on topics such as artificial intelligence, biopharmaceutical development, neuroscience, intellectual property law, crop protection and bioinformatics. Take Two Speaker Series — Working in the Space Between Borders

Thursday, March 5, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., AH100, Andy’s Place, Anderson Hall

Dr. Michelle Hogue, associate professor and coordinator of the Indigenous Student Success Cohort, will talk about her research exploring the best practices in Canada, Australia and New Zealand to develop an inclusive, culturally responsive teaching practice. Dr. Julie Young, a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Critical Border Studies and assistant professor in geography, will discuss her research to better understand North America’s borders in the context of broader global processes and what local practices tell us about where, how and for whom borders work.
