PUBlic Professor Series — The Building Blocks of Africa’s Development

Thursday, Jan. 24, 7 p.m., Sandman Signature Lethbridge Lodge, 320 Scenic Dr. S.

Everyone is invited to join Dr. Alexander Darku as he explores the resources, politics and economics involved in Africa’s development since its independence in the late 1950s. Development efforts in Africa have gone through turns and twists and Darku will explore the factors that have driven Africa’s growth and development.

Biology Graduate Research Symposium

Friday, Jan. 25, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., PE Atrium and PE264

The eighth annual symposium features poster presentations and research talks judged by faculty from the Department of Biology. Poster presentations run until noon in the PE Atrium and oral presentations begin at 1 p.m. in PE264. Everyone is welcome to attend and learn about the original research being conducted by U of L students.

Alberta Wilderness Association: Wilderness Roadshow

Friday, Jan. 25, 3 to 4:30 p.m., AH176, Anderson Hall

The Department of Geography is hosting this afternoon seminar that features the work of the oldest conservation group in Alberta dedicated to a network of protected areas. Founded in 1965 by a feisty group of backpackers, outfitters and anglers who were worried about changes on the landscape, members of the Alberta Wilderness Association have tirelessly advocated for the protection and wise management of Alberta’s wild spaces and protected areas.

Cuttings from the Tree of Knowledge: The Propagation of Creation Museums in North America

Friday, Jan. 25, 3 to 4:30 p.m., B650, University Hall

The Department of History Colloquium Series presents a talk by Dr. James Linville, a professor in the Department of Religious Studies. Linville will discuss the Young Earth Creationist movement — which holds that the universe, Earth and all life were created around 6,000 years ago — and the creation museums that have sprung up in the last few decades. Linville will examine the reasons for the genre’s success and its manifestations in Canada.
