Black History on the Prairies

Tuesday, Jan. 19, 11 a.m., Zoom session

This question and answer session features critically acclaimed scholars, Dr. Jenna Bailey (U of L adjunct assistant professor, history), Deborah Dobbins (CEO of Shiloh Centre for Multicultural Roots), Dr. David Este (professor of social work at the University of Calgary) and Dr. Karina Vernon (associate professor of English, University of Toronto). Anyone interested in joining this discussion is asked to watch the documentary film, We are the Roots: Black Settlers and their Experiences of Discrimination on the Canadian Prairies beforehand. Destination Exploration Virtual STEM clubs are open for registration

­Three virtual science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) clubs are now open for registration. Each club has three themes, each lasting for three weeks. Clubs for those in Grades 4 to 7 include the FriYAY Series, offered Friday afternoons from 2 to 3:30 p.m., and InnovateHER, offered Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. For those in Grades 6 to 9, the Arconic STEM Club meets Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. More details are available on the Destination Exploration website.

Join the Faculty of Fine Arts for the first Art NOW lecture of 2021 as artist Alana Bartol shares research and artworks from her multi-part project with the U of L Art Gallery exploring the past, present and future of coal mining in the Crowsnest Pass. Department of History Colloquium Series

Thursday, Jan. 21, 7 p.m.

Join the Department of History for an online Zoom presentation by Dr. Mai Ishihara, assistant professor in the Center for Ainu and Indigenous Studies at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. She specializes in cultural anthropology and Ainu and Indigenous Research. Her talk, Silence, Pain, Speech: The Invisible and Subalternized 'Self' Towards Decolonization/Hope, is co-sponsored by Asian Studies, the Centre for Oral History and Tradition and the Women Scholars' Speaker Series. Registration is required.
