University of Lethbridge highlights for the week of January 11 to 16

Rush Week — U of L Students’ Union

Monday–Friday, Jan. 11–15, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Atrium, University Hall

Anyone who made a resolution to try something new in 2016 might just find it during Rush Week. Clubs on campus are recruiting new members all week long and their interests are broad and include swing dancing, curling, archaeology, mental health, and object manipulation, such as juggling, and much more.

Harley Hotchkiss Memorial Lecture — Dr. Samuel Weiss

Thursday, Jan. 14, 9 to 10 a.m., EP1201, CCBN

Weiss will talk about his research into brain stem cells and the hope that these studies will lead to new treatment possibilities for malignant gliomas that are currently untreatable.

Prentice Institute Special Guest Speaker — Dr. Edward Brynn

Friday, Jan. 15, noon to 1:30 p.m., L1102, Prentice Boardroom (weather permitting)

Dr. Brynn has agreed to speak at an impromptu Brown Bag event while he is travelling through Lethbridge.Brynn is a historian and diplomat who has lived and worked in several African countries, including Mauritania, Gambia, Ghana and Burkina Faso. He also served as the State Department Historian in Washington, D.C. from 2009 to 2012.

Frostbite 2016 — Third annual Frostbite Rail Jam

Friday, Jan. 15, noon to 4 p.m., University Hall Breezeway

The U of L Students’ Union and Boarderline have organized an event that will see skiers and snowboarders from southern Alberta compete for a chance to win $1,000 and other prizes. Spectators are welcome.

Fine Arts Graduate Students Colloquium

Saturday, Jan. 16, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., W570, Recital Hall, and the Dr. Foster James Penny Building at 324 5 St. S.

In addition to the dozens of graduate student presentations scheduled throughout the day, a 9 a.m. keynote address by Sandi Somers, covering the making of ‘The Riders,’ a dance film shot in the Alberta Badlands near Drumheller, opens the colloquium.
