Social play behaviour in rats: neural mechanisms

Monday, Feb. 3, 1:45 p.m., AH116, Anderson Hall

Dr. Marijke Achterberg, an assistant professor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, will discuss the neural mechanisms underlying social play. Everyone is welcome to attend this neuroscience academic lecture sponsored by the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience.

Art NOW Series: Eric Dyck

Monday, Feb. 3, noon to 12:50 p.m., University Recital Hall, W570

Over the past 20 years, local cartoonist and art educator Eric Dyck has focused his professional and independent art making on interactions with the public and illustrated depictions or reportage of those interactions. His art practice demonstrates a commitment to sharing the sense of place and community he’s experienced while living in Calgary, Lethbridge and the Maritimes. His exhibit, Kohlrabi and Foods with Stories to Share, is showing in the Helen Christou Gallery until Feb. 28.

Wikipedia Editathon

Monday, Feb. 3, 3 to 5 p.m., L1060, Library

The U of L Library is participating in Wikipedia’s #1Lib1Ref event, a campaign inviting every librarian on Earth to participate in the online encyclopedia project by improving articles with additional citations. No Wikipedia experience is needed and participants will be focusing on Wikipedia articles related to southern Alberta.

A day before the Job Fair, Counselling & Career Services is offering services to students to help them put their best foot forward. Students can get a free professional headshot for their LinkedIn profile, shop for professional apparel and pay what they can, get a swag bag, have coffee and a snack while getting their questions answered by career professionals.

“Children of a Lesser God” with Dr. Paul Viminitz

Tuesday, Feb. 4, 3 to 4:30 p.m., C610 University Hall

Viminitz introduces the concept of political theodicy, a theological construct about how faith traditions ameliorate the evil humans inflict on each other as members of collectives and in His name. His research focuses on the cycle of predations between Jews, Christians and Muslims and the Scriptures they have in common, which would provide that amelioration if they were attended to.

The campus community is invited to get some fresh air and exercise during the noon hour as part of the annual Winter Walk Day. Walkers will leave the 1st Choice Savings Centre at 12:05 and walk around Aperture Lake for half an hour.

Dr. Jason Laurendeau, a professor of sociology, and his students will take a look at Canadian outdoor retailer Mountain Equipment Co-operative (MEC) and how its brand creates relationships to outdoor places, both by constructing a narrow range of bodies to be at home in the wilderness and ignoring those who have been displaced from wild spaces.
