Native Awareness Week

Monday, Feb. 29, 11 a.m. to Friday, 1:30 p.m., various locations

From the opening blessing and mini powwow on Monday to Friday’s closing fire with the elders, those who attend any of this year’s Native Awareness Week activities will come away enriched. A full schedule is available online.

Music at Noon Series — John Conlon, baritone; Carolyn Herrington, piano; Sandra Stringer, mezzo soprano; Janet Youngdahl, soprano

Tuesday, March 1, 12:15 to 1 p.m., Recital Hall, W570

The 24 Italian Aria collection is a testament of vocal beauty and compositional style from 1602 through to the mid-19th century. The collection introduces students to a wide variety of repertoire.

Virtual Reality Works of Felix and Paul Studios — Anil Pereira

Wednesday, March 2

Pereira, U of L distinguished alumnus, is a senior advisor to Montreal-based Félix and Paul Studios, the leader in 360-degree, 3D, cinematic filmmaking for virtual reality. In addition to delivering presentations and workshops, Pereira will demonstrate short films that let viewers spend time with LeBron James as he trains and experience life with nomadic tribes in Borneo and Tanzania. Pereira is available for brief interviews between 1:30 and 2 p.m. or shortly after 4 p.m. at the AGILITY Innovation Series panel discussion in the Students’ Union Ballrooms.

AGILITY Innovation Series — Innovation in Agriculture; Where is the Smart Money Going?

Wednesday, March 2, 4 p.m., Students’ Union Ballrooms

A panel of Canadian agriculture and finance leaders will discuss the roles of innovation, rapid technology changes and finance in exposing and developing new agribusiness opportunities that place Canada at the forefront of meeting changing global food demands.

Department of History Colloquium and the Institute for Child and Youth Studies — The Stoney Nakoda, Reverend John McDougall and The McDougall Orphanage, 1883–1908

Friday, March 4, 3 to 5 p.m., L1050, located in the hallway off the main entrance to the Library

Dr. Will Pratt, Mount Royal University and U of L, will talk about how the McDougall Orphanage featured into a program that sought to assimilate the Stoneys into the Euro-Canadian settler society, but also how Aboriginal conceptions of time and the importance of the hunt were accepted by church and state.
