University of Lethbridge highlights for the week of April 11 to 17

Student Success Centre — Car Smash

Monday, April 11, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., The Grove, across from Markin Hall and the Students’ Union Building

All semester long, students have been writing papers, reading textbooks and studying until the wee hours. Now they’re facing a raft of final exams. The tool kit for some stress relief has a sledge hammer and an old car ready to take some wallops. Students can bash away in a controlled and safe setting until their stress is gone. Other resources and stress relievers will also be on hand.

Opening Reception — The IntraEnvironmental Sound Project

Monday, April 11, 1 to 3 p.m., Project Channel, Room 1102, Library Level 11

Alex Bohn and Max Hopkins, both U of L Fine Arts Music Department students, recorded environmental sound at Banff, Calgary and Lethbridge. They edited, filtered and mixed their recordings to create an original soundscape composition for each of the locales. They will deliver a presentation about their project at 1 p.m. and a coffee reception is scheduled for 2 p.m.

AGILITY Innovation Series — The Local Conscience: Beyond Food

Monday, April 11, 4 to 6:30 p.m., PE 261

Julia Mitchell, owner of Urban Grocer and an expert in permaculture, will share her experiences as an entrepreneur and connect the dots between agricultural practice, end products and a healthy local food community.

Dhillon School of Business — 29th Annual Scholarship Dinner

Thursday, April 14, 6 to 9 p.m., Coast Lethbridge Hotel

This year’s honorees are Marvin and Chloe Galts (Galko Homes). Their entrepreneurial talents have significantly contributed to the growth of Lethbridge, both as employers and supporters of the community. Proceeds from the dinner will go toward the Marvin and Chloe Galts Scholarship fund.

Agility Neuroscience Pitch Competition

Friday, April 15, 9 to 11 a.m., EP1201, Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience

In the style of Dragon’s Den, neuroscience students will be pitching their ideas about potential businesses, innovative opportunities and potential markets in neuroscience to an executive in the hopes of walking away with a cash prize. Media are welcome to come and interview the organizers and winners at 10:30 a.m.

Prentice Institute Brown Bag Series — The Discovery of Return Migration

Friday, April 15, noon to 1:30 p.m., Room L1102, Library

Dr. Jeremiah Allen, a U of L professor emeritus of economics, will talk about a facet of migration called return moves. Beginning in the 1960s, social scientists started exploring the implications of the fact that somewhere between a quarter and a third of all moves are quickly followed by a move back.

Rohub Ensemble — The Parrot

Friday, April 15, 7:30 p.m., St. Augustine’s Church

This concert of classical Persian music features the talents of the U of L’s Dr. Janet Youngdahl, soprano; Dale Ketcheson, guitar; Mohsen Seyed-Mahmoud, zarb (a goblet-shaped drum), and Joe Porter (MMus ’13), percussion. Tickets are $20 at the door and $10 for children aged 10 and younger. All proceeds go to Syrian refugee resettlement in Lethbridge. A media call is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 12, in the lobby of the University Theatre.

Culture Vulture Saturdays — Earth Art

Saturday, April 16, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Atrium, University Centre for the Arts

In celebration of Earth Day and the Aboriginal tradition of living in harmony with the natural environment, visitors are invited to create art works using natural materials found outside.

U of L and Volunteer Lethbridge — Summer Colour Fun Run

Sunday, April 17, 2 to 5 p.m., The Grove, behind the Students’ Union Building and Markin Hall

The U of L and Volunteer Lethbridge are partners in this five-kilometre walk/run on the U of L campus. Entry fee is $40 for adults, $35 for students, with $20 as a donation. All proceeds raised will go to Volunteer Lethbridge.
