University of Lethbridge 2019 Spring Convocation week activities

This week, the University of Lethbridge will celebrate the achievements of 1,347 students as they cross the stage at 2019 Spring Convocation.

Ceremonies take place Thursday, May 30 and Friday, May 31 at the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. each day.

All ceremonies are free of charge and open to the public and media. As well, there are a number of associated activities the media are welcome to attend.

Wednesday, May 29

Pipe Ceremony, 2 p.m., Iikaiskini Gathering Place (Paterson Centre located across from Mt. Blakiston House residence) – Celebrate the rich cultural heritage, beliefs and relationships of the Blackfoot people at a pipe ceremony as we officially welcome Charles Weaselhead (Taatsiikiipoyii) as the University’s 14th Chancellor
(Media will only be able to record certain aspects of the ceremony as directed by elders)

Thursday, May 30

Ceremony I – 9:30 a.m. – School of Graduate Studies (PhD and MSc); Faculty of Arts & Science (BASC, BSc); Installation of Chancellor Charles Weaselhead; Speaker Research Award: Dr. Olga Kovalchuk; Honorary Degree: Dr. Arthur B. McDonald

Lieutenant Governor’s Social Studies Education Student Award Presentation – 12 p.m., TH331 (Turcotte Hall) – Lieutenant Governor Lois Mitchell will present the award to a graduating U of L student

Public Lecture – 2 p.m., M1040 (Markin Hall) – Dr. Arthur B. McDonald, Understanding the Universe from Deep Underground

Ceremony II – 2:30 p.m. – School of Graduate Studies (MA and MN); Faculty of Arts & Science (BA); Faculty of Health Sciences (BHSc, BN and BTR); Board of Governors Teaching Chair: Dr. Olu Awosoga; Distinguished Teaching Award: Dr. Harold Jansen; Honorary Degree: Hugh Aylmer Dempsey (unable to attend due to health, will address graduands via video)

Chancellor’s Dinner – 6 p.m., Coast Hotel Lethbridge – A dinner to honour all award recipients

Friday, May 31

Ceremony III – 9:30 a.m. – School of Graduate Studies (MC and MEd); Faculty of Education (BEd); Combined Degrees with Education; Faculty of Fine Arts (all programs); Honorary Degree: Dr. Cindy Blackstock

Ceremony IV – 2:30 p.m. – School of Graduate Studies (MSc (Mgt)); Dhillon School of Business (all programs); Combined Degrees with Management; Honorary Degree: Navjeet Dhillon

Additional interview opportunities are available following the conclusion of each ceremony (approximately 11:30 a.m. for morning ceremonies and 4 p.m. for afternoon ceremonies). Due to time constraints, there is NO AVAILABILITY FOR THE CONVOCATION ORGANIZING TEAM PRIOR TO CEREMONIES.

Graduands and platform guests will be assembling in University Hall, Level 6, prior to each procession.
