Blackfoot Women’s Empowerment project highlights community and collaboration

Virtual iGEM Giant Jamboree sees University of Lethbridge-supported teams garner silver and bronze

University of Lethbridge-supported teams earned silver and bronze medals as the International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) Giant Jamboree took place in the virtual space recently. The annual celebration of synthetic biology and genetic engineering is usually hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, MA and was moved online as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, 4,000 participants attended, with the U of L represented by its collegiate entry and the Lethbridge high school team.

U of L appoints new director to the Prentice Institute

The University of Lethbridge is pleased to announce Dr. Lars Hallström has been appointed as the new director of the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy effective Jan. 1, 2021. “We are excited to welcome Dr. Hallström to the University of Lethbridge and the Prentice Institute,” says Dr. Erasmus Okine, vice-president (academic) and provost. “I got to know Lars when I was still at the University of Alberta and he’s a dedicated scholar and researcher whose expertise is well-suited to the Prentice Institute.”

University of Lethbridge solidifies Board of Governors with new member and reappointments

The University of Lethbridge is pleased to welcome a new member to its Board of Governors and the reappointment of two others who have made significant contributions to the U of L community. Calgary-based businessman Darcy Gonci (BSC ’96, BMgt ’99) has been appointed to the Board of Directors for a three-year term through October 2023. Terry Whitehead (BA ’94) and Karen Gunn will both serve second terms as board members, also through October 2023.

University of Lethbridge extending holiday break in effort to enhance campus well-being

The University of Lethbridge is extending its holiday break and pushing back the start of Spring 2021 semester classes in an effort to address student mental health concerns and enhance public health and safety following the holiday season. The start of Spring 2021 semester classes has been pushed to Saturday, January 9, 2021, from its previous scheduled start of January 6, 2021. The move, while giving students much-needed additional time with family and friends over the holiday period, will extend the semester by just one day and still satisfy all class contact hours.

Destination Exploration to offer virtual clubs in January

Clubs will help kids explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Destination Exploration (DE) is meeting the need for STEM activities and learning by relaunching their after-school clubs in January. Students will be able to perform science experiments, explore robotics, do math games and puzzles, learn online technology and how to build systems.
