Dr. Paul Vasey’s gender studies research featured in National Geographic magazine, documentary

While popular culture is just beginning to wrestle with questions surrounding transgender individuals, the University of Lethbridge’s Dr. Paul Vasey has been at the forefront of research in these areas for the better part of 15 years. It’s no wonder then that National Geographic sought his expertise when putting together it’s January magazine focused on gender issues and that he’d be central to the accompanying documentary, Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric, to be broadcast Feb. 6, 2017.

Possibilities to be showcased at 50th anniversary Open House

The University of Lethbridge has added a special spring Open House for prospective students, their families and the local community to learn more about the exciting educational opportunities being offered. “This is a chance for people to visit campus and check out some of the things that are happening here,” says Susan Bakker (BA/BMgt ’10), manager of national recruitment. “Because it’s the U of L’s 50th anniversary year, we wanted to give people another occasion to see our campus beyond the traditional open house in the fall.”

Fulbright Visiting Professor investigates learning and memory

Humans possess different types of long-term memory and as a cognitive neuroscientist, Dr. Irene Kan has conducted research into the workings of memory systems and how they might support each other in the event of a brain injury. Kan, associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, is at the University of Lethbridge this semester as a Fulbright Visiting Professor and Visiting Researcher. She will be collaborating with neuroscientists at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN).

Canada 150 grant facilitates upgrades to Max Bell pool

U of L geographers observe climate-related tipping point to accelerated permafrost thaw

Research by Drs. Laura Chasmer and Chris Hopkinson, University of Lethbridge geography professors, indicates that the 1997–1998 El Niño may have served as a tipping point for accelerating permafrost loss in their study area in the Northwest Territories. The study, Threshold loss of discontinuous permafrost and landscape evolution, has been published in the latest issue of the prestigious journal Global Change Biology.

Oral history project celebrates U of L’s 50th anniversary with 50 Voices

The 50 Voices oral history project has woven a tapestry of perspectives about the University of Lethbridge over the past 50 years. From the early days, when Dr. Van Christou (LLD ’84) worked to convince the provincial government of the need for a university in Lethbridge, to the turn of the century, when Dr. Bryan Kolb was shocked but pleased by then-president Dr. Howard Tennant’s promise to construct a neuroscience building, the project captures the U of L’s impressive emergence as a leading university.
