Fifty years ago, Dr. Russell Leskiw (LLD ’93) became the University of Lethbridge’s first acting president, guiding the institution from its birth on Jan. 1, 1967 through its first six months. In honour of his legacy, the U of L recently established the Dr. Russell Leskiw Memorial Scholarship and, this fall, the first scholarship was given to Kelcey McCarthy, a fifth-year education student.

The University of Lethbridge continues to make students its top priority and is continually expanding its national research imprint, as reflected in the annual Maclean’s University Rankings report.

Dr. Dawn McBride, a psychologist and professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge, has received a Tulip Award from the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter for her work to end family violence and abuse. The awards are distributed among six categories and McBride was recognized with a Community Partnership Award, given to those who have joined in the work to end family violence and abuse.

Like any Hollywood nightmare, a sequel is always in the offing, and identity theft just isn’t going away. With that in mind, Information Technology Services at the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Mobile Shredding are back to protect southern Alberta residents with A Nightmare on Shred Street 2: Data’s Revenge. A free event offering shredding of personal documents, hard drive degaussing and e-waste recycling, the first Nightmare on Shred Street debuted last fall.

For the first time, evidence of the zebra chip pathogen has been found in potato fields in southern Alberta, but the University of Lethbridge’s Dr. Dan Johnson cautions against panic.

Chemistry and Biochemistry students will be vying for cash prizes as they showcase their research work to a panel of judges at the 11th annual Chinook Symposium on Friday, Oct. 20. Their research topics are wide ranging, including concussion diagnosis, the effects of tobacco on DNA, pathways in fusarium head blight (a disease affecting cereal grains), and the effects of prebiotics and moderate exercise in the gut bacteria of rats.

A sudden change of mind led Dr. Joyce D’Andrea to nursing but it proved to be a wise decision that set the course for a lengthy and rewarding career in nursing education. For her dedication to preparing students for work as professional nurses, the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge is pleased to present her with the Friend of Health Sciences Award.

Recently named one of the most exceptional post-secondary teachers in Canada, Dr. Shelly Wismath has been appointed the first dean of the University of Lethbridge’s new School of Liberal Education. The U of L’s Board of Governors approved the appointment last week, granting Wismath a five-year term that commences Monday, Oct. 16, 2017.
