The University of Lethbridge’s newest building to be named Science Commons

The University of Lethbridge’s new $280-million science facility has been named Science Commons. The name was chosen to reflect the fact that the building brings together eight different departments in an environment that stimulates collaboration and brings a multidisciplinary approach to solving the complex problems of today.

Making a difference in the lives of others, Aaron Tamayose awarded Young Alumnus of the Year

The University of Lethbridge Alumni Association (ULAA) is excited to announce two-time graduate Aaron Tamayose (BA ’09, MC ’17) as the 2019 Young Alumnus of the Year. Tamayose, who worked nine years in the U of L’s Accessible Learning Centre, is currently a registered psychologist and Canadian certified counsellor for Forensic Assessment and Outpatient Services (FAOS) with Alberta Health Services.

Renowned researcher Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke named 2019 Alumna of the Year

U of L researcher to examine if memory can trigger seizures

Thanks to a grant of more than $530,000 from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Dr. Artur Luczak, a neuroscientist with the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience at the University of Lethbridge, will investigate whether seizures can be triggered by memory.

Dr. Dennis Connolly to be honoured at second annual Arts & Science Scholarship Dinner

The University of Lethbridge Faculty of Arts & Science is pleased to honour mathematics professor, Dr. Dennis Connolly (LLD ’17), at its second annual Wine & Dine: Arts & Science Scholarship Dinner. The dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 17 at the Sandman Signature Lethbridge Lodge. Proceeds from the event go into creating a scholarship in the honouree’s name, providing students with essential financial support to assist them in attaining their educational goals.

Companion pieces by artist Joan Miró reunited after 60 years

In 1955, when two drawings by Spanish artist Joan Miró were up for sale at the Curt Valentin Gallery in New York, Roloff Beny (LLD’72), a Medicine Hat-born artist and internationally known photographer who frequently shopped at the gallery, contacted his good friend, Dr. Margaret (Marmie) Perkins Hess (DFA ’04), with a proposition. Beny wrote to Hess about “two small but superb Miró drawings” that he could get a better price on if he bought both. Hess took him up on the offer, buying her Miró drawing from the gallery via Beny the same year.

Funding to provide state-of-the-art housing for U of L lab animals

The University of Lethbridge has received nearly $90,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund to help provide essential rat housing infrastructure in the newly constructed Science and Academic Building. Dr. Gerlinde Metz, a neuroscience professor with the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN), and Dr. Rob Sutherland, director and Chair of the CCBN, say the funds are vitally important for the collaborative research conducted by all members of the neuroscience department.
