Astronauts blasting into space face a barrage of stressors — noise, vibration, G forces, loss of gravity, radiation, isolation and closed quarters, to name a few. A new study, led by a team around University of Lethbridge neuroscientist Dr. Gerlinde Metz, is examining what these stressors do to the human body in space and may in turn unlock clues to help mitigate the effects of similar stressors on everyday people.

The PS III Large-Group Seminar and Symposium is the last big event for PS III (Professional Semester III, the final 12-week practicum) students, and representatives from 16 Alberta school divisions will be on campus to speak with students and see the results of their professional inquiry projects.

Buy A Student A Breakfast campaign launches on Giving Tuesday to support student food security

The University of Lethbridge community is coming together in support of student food security by kicking off the Buy A Student A Breakfast (BASAB) initiative today — Giving Tuesday. Every dollar donated will be matched by the University to provide up to 500 breakfasts for a total of 1,000 student breakfasts, which will be distributed during the first week of final exams in December.

$10-million partnership will study the effectiveness of Canada’s wetlands in helping achieve climate targets

Wetlands provide habitat for wildlife, filtration for water and even play a role in protecting us from drought. Now a group of Canadian researchers, including Drs. Larry Flanagan and Matthew Bogard from the University of Lethbridge, will study them to learn more about their exact role in combating climate change. Led by Dr. Irena Creed, vice-principal of research and innovation at the University of Toronto, Scarborough, the project will build scientific understanding of wetlands, their function and the services they provide.

Fortunately, observations over the last couple of decades have provided us with many of the answers, namely that it was very small in the past, it is expanding at an accelerating rate now and that 95 per cent of its contents are dark, i.e. cannot be observed directly.
