Initiative between Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens and University of Lethbridge and University of Plymouth Nikkei Memory Capture Project earns national attention

Acknowledging her exceptional contributions to health sciences, neuroscientist Dr. Gerlinde Metz has become the University of Lethbridge’s first professor to be named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences Fellow (CAHS). Fellows are recognized by their peers nationally and internationally for their contributions to health sciences and have demonstrated leadership, distinctive competencies and a commitment to advance health sciences.

With an eye to helping solve the crisis in health care, Angie Grewal, a University of Lethbridge fourth-year master of nursing student, believes that expanding the role of nurse practitioners could help address the shortage of physicians in Alberta and lead to more accessible and cost-effective care.

Four enterprising University of Lethbridge students have launched the #MycosMentalHealth campaign to increase awareness of mental health and natural remedies that can help.

Iitsisaanoowa (Vision Beyond), Elder Christina Fox is a woman of devout faith and humility whose grace and kindness have made her a beloved presence in the schools within the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division. For her steadfast commitment to Indigenous youth, her leadership in education and the ongoing work of reconciliation, the University of Lethbridge will recognize Fox with an honorary degree at 2023 Fall Convocation.

University of Lethbridge Pronghorns assistant women’s basketball coaches Paige Crozon and Kacie Bosch (BA ’21) are on top of the world after leading Canada to its second straight title at the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series Final in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia this past weekend. The duo, along with twin sisters Katherine Plouffe and Michelle Plouffe, defeated France 16-15 in the championship game, and now look forward to qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics. A respected national and international educational leader, Dr. Rita L. Irwin (BEd ’77) is both a well-known artist and renowned researcher who has long strived to improve education for all learners through artistic and creative avenues.

According to Alzheimer’s Disease International, many factors have been linked to the development of dementia. While some risk factors, such as age or family history, can’t be modified, other risk factors, such as exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption and obesity, can be altered. Those modifiable risk factors are of particular interest to University of Lethbridge neuroscientist Dr. Rob McDonald.
