The list of past honorees includes a who’s-who of astronauts, premiers, international entertainers, world renowned scientists, authors and more, and with the University of Lethbridge approaching its 50th anniversary, nominations are being sought for a particularly distinguished group to be recognized with honorary degrees in 2017. The call is out for nominations to be submitted to the U of L Senate by November 1, 2016 for the Spring 2017 and Fall 2017 honorees.

Recognized for his integrity and impassioned approach to the law, the Honourable Mr. Justice Ronald A. Skolrood (BA ’83) has made significant contributions to his profession, all the while giving back to his community through generous volunteerism.

WHAT: Light Up Purple campaign marking World Mental Health Day 2016 WHEN: Tuesday, October 11, 2016, all day WHERE: Throughout campus The University of Lethbridge will be marking World Mental Health Day 2016 by participating in the Light Up Purple campaign. Created by the Amanda Todd Legacy Society, the campaign is designed to spread the colour purple as an effort to raise awareness of the stigma of mental health and the impacts of bullying on youth. Some of the activities planned to take place on campus include:

University of Lethbridge professor Dr. Paul Hayes has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. This is among the highest honours bestowed to chemists and a first for the University of Lethbridge. “It’s a humbling group to be a member of,” says Hayes. “I was surprised and honoured. The Royal Society of Chemistry is based in the United Kingdom and it has a very prestigious history that goes back 175 years.”

A new study by a University of Lethbridge water researcher has found that challenges in acquiring water have housing developers in the Calgary region worried about the effects on their industry and real estate, on home buyers and the economy in general. “What struck me about the findings was that all housing developers in the study said challenges exist in acquiring licensed water allocations for housing development and for three-quarters of them, it is their biggest issue,” says Dr. Lorraine Nicol, a U of L research associate.

On October 21 and 22, children ages five to 12 from across southern Alberta are invited to participate in a variety of Halloween-themed science activities in three separate events at the University of Lethbridge. Spooky Science Weekend offers numerous fun, hands-on science activities for enthusiastic children, exposing them to several different streams of science and spooky fun!
