Computer scientist who has increased the number of women in computing and mathematics to receive honorary degree

The University of Lethbridge is pleased to announce that Dr. Maria Klawe, president of California’s Harvey Mudd College, will receive an honorary degree at the 2017 Spring Convocation ceremonies. Klawe is a theoretical computer scientist from Edmonton whose career has been marked by research into the gender issues in mathematics and computer science and significant contributions as a senior administrator.

Dr. Leroy Little Bear to be honoured with 2017 University of Lethbridge Speaker Research Award

Renowned as an international scholar, speaker and leader, Dr. Leroy Little Bear is a pioneer in the advancement of Indigenous education and the winner of the 2017 University of Lethbridge Speaker Research Award. A mentor and instructor of students and an esteemed advisor on Aboriginal matters at the local, provincial, national and international level, Little Bear was a founder of the University’s Department of Native American Studies, one of the first such departments in Canada.

Advisory - High school students learn about investing and vie for prizes in second annual finance competition

Ten teams of high school students from across southern Alberta have been weighing whether they should buy gold, treasury bills or stocks in fictitious companies as they try to build their portfolios in the lead up to the second annual High School Finance Competition. Sponsored by the University of Lethbridge’s Dhillon School of Business, the competition helps students learn about investing, the fundamentals of the stock market, risk, teamwork and communication.

U of L announces Dr. Athanasios Zovoilis as its newest Canada Research Chair

The federal government has named Dr. Athanasios Zovoilis, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, a Tier II Canada Research Chair in RNA Bioinformatics and Genomics. The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Canada’s minister of science, recently announced $125.9 million in funding for 142 chairholders. Along with the Canada Research Chairs, Duncan introduced a new Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan to address the lack of diversity among Canada Research Chairs.

Oral history lecture and workshop tap local authors and stories

Anyone lucky enough to have visited the Bow on Tong apothecary in Lethbridge’s Chinatown took a step back in time. Closed in 2013, the apothecary allowed visitors a look at dozens of drawers that once contained traditional remedies like ginseng or powdered horns or fungi.

High school students get introduction to Management

High school students from Lethbridge and area will discover all that the University of Lethbridge’s Dhillon School of Business offers through Experience Management Day on Wednesday, May 3. Students will get the chance to network with peers from other schools and participate in a team-building exercise that challenges them to build the tallest structure they can in 18 minutes, using 20 spaghetti noodles, a metre each of tape and string, plus a marshmallow to go on top.
