U of L neuroscientists awarded nearly $2 million for research into Alzheimer's disease

Drs. Bruce McNaughton and Majid Mohajerani will investigate brain neurobiology related to Alzheimer’s disease thanks to two grants worth nearly $2 million over five years from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR).

Brain Awareness Week to highlight local ground-breaking discoveries

Brain Awareness Week at the University of Lethbridge, March 13 to 17, will showcase the world-renowned neuroscience research being conducted right here in southern Alberta. “The Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience is the only research facility of its kind in Canada,” says Dr. Artur Luczak, a neuroscience researcher and professor and Brain Awareness Week organizer. “We want the public to step inside and learn about the incredible activities that are taking in their community. Everyone is welcome and all ages are encouraged to participate.”

Agricultural Students’ Society hosting renowned agri-marketer Robert Saik at inaugural Grow the Future Gala

Robert Saik, renowned author, movie producer, agriculture advocate and the 2014 Agri-Marketer of the Year, will be the keynote speaker at the Agricultural Students’ Society’s inaugural Grow the Future Gala, Friday, Mar. 16 in the University of Lethbridge Students’ Union Ballrooms. Commonly referred to as the Aggies, the student club created the Grow the Future Gala to showcase the accomplishments of the club’s work over the past year and highlight the agriculture-related work being done at the University to local industry.

For Lethbridge residents suffering from the effects of chronic HBV and its resulting health problems, treatment options in Lethbridge do not exist, sending most patients to the Calgary Liver Unit. On Thursday, Mar. 8, Calgary Liver Unit Medical Director Dr. Carla Coffin will present her work at the University of Lethbridge as part of the U of L’s Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI) Speaker Series.

Reaction to Federal Budget announcement

Dr. Claudia Malacrida, associate vice-president (research) at the University of Lethbridge, was one of nine panelists who participated in Canada’s Fundamental Science Review, serves on the Federation of Social Science and Humanities Board of Directors, and serves on the governing council for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Canadian author Lorri Neilsen Glenn to visit U of L

As part of a tour for her new book Following the River, Traces of Red River Women, Dr. Lorri Neilsen Glenn will stop at the U of L on Feb. 27 to speak to students in the Faculty of Education and do an evening public reading. Neilsen Glenn, professor emerita at Mount Saint Vincent University and former Poet Laureate for Halifax, lived in Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan before moving to Nova Scotia in 1983. She is the author and editor of 14 books of poetry, nonfiction and scholarly work.
