Have you ever wondered how clean surfaces really are — even after you’ve tried to disinfect them?

In March 2018, University of Lethbridge employees discovered a fraud perpetrated by a fellow employee. This week, Lethbridge Police Services (LPS) arrested and charged this individual with multiple offences. The LPS statement can be found here. This employee, with more than 30 years of experience at the University, abused her detailed knowledge of the financial systems of the U of L and falsified records to conceal the estimated theft of $580,000.

Dr. Michele Konschuh, a research associate in the Department of Biological Sciences, is leading a study to help ensure Alberta’s potato industry stays healthy, thanks to a three-year grant from the province’s Results Driven Agriculture Research (RDAR) fund and in-kind support from stakeholders in the potato industry.

A documentary film 10 years in the making, My Octopus Teacher won an Oscar for best documentary feature at Sunday night’s Academy Awards ceremony and those cheering included Dr. Jennifer Mather, a University of Lethbridge psychology professor and octopus expert. “I was really pleased to see this wonderful documentary win an Oscar,” says Mather. “Craig has created a film that helps us understand more about octopuses and how intelligent they are.”

Despite more gambling options being available to Canadians, the prevalence of gambling and problem gambling is on the decline throughout the country according to recent Statistics Canada data from the 2018 Canadian Community Health Survey. A recent study out of the Alberta Gambling Research Institute (AGRI) indicates that while these numbers are positive overall, troubling trends still exist.

During National Volunteer Week from April 18 to 24, the University of Lethbridge is celebrating the efforts of all volunteers, including our staff, faculty and students, who continue to offer their services during the pandemic. “This pandemic has really highlighted a lot of the inequities in our social structure and gaps in care,” says Dr. Shelly Wismath, dean of the School of Liberal Education. “In some ways, there’s a greater need for volunteers than ever, but it has to be done differently with careful attention to health and the need for distancing.”

Dr. Julia Brassolotto, a Faculty of Health Sciences professor at the University of Lethbridge, and co-investigators, Drs. Pia Kontos and Alisa Grigorovich from the University of Toronto, are looking to develop and evaluate a toolkit that can be used in long-term care settings to support healthy and safe sexual expression for people with dementia.
