Advisory — Women in STEM Conference to showcase the work of women in scientific disciplines
Inspired by the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the University of Lethbridge presents its annual Women in STEM Conference on Wednesday, February 11, 12:30 to 4 p.m., in the Science Commons Atrium.
A celebration of women who are working in and advancing research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, the conference features two poster sessions, a panel discussion and a keynote address.
Dr. Laura Keffer-Wilkes (Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry) is the originator of the conference, having created it as part of her EDI Scholar work to bring fellow researchers together from across disciplines.
“While I generally know about the research happening in my own area, I felt that I was missing connections between the different science departments, and this was a good way to bring everyone together to celebrate the amazing research going on at ULethbridge,” she says. “It is just a joyful celebration of women in STEM!”
Graduate student Emily Trew is a co-organizer of this year’s event and says the conference brings the work being done by women in science to the forefront.
“The representation of women in STEM provides such a welcoming environment for those at all stages of their academic or professional journeys,” says Trew. “The panel was designed around the idea of celebrating some of the fantastic women in STEM we have on campus and allowing them a platform to share their journey and the advice they wish they had early on in their careers.”
Titled, Advice to Your Younger Self, the panel discussion takes place at 1:45 p.m., sandwiched between poster sessions at 1 and 2:30 p.m. Dr. Caroline Aubry-
Wake (Department of Geography & Environment) presents the keynote address at 3:15 p.m.
